Video, video!

It's all the rage now, video blogging. You can be a citizen journalist, a film maker, a star on internet tv - but getting your footage uploaded has been a hassle; Bandwidth, storage, and just how can you get things digitized on the cheap? Well friends, I don't have an answer for that last question (my services are not inexpensive) but if you're shooting digital, I've dug up some options for you.

Oh, and I'll note one other thing for you - blogger.com has this annoying habit of stripping out tags it doesn't deem useful. Like /embed Don't let it bother you, just remember - "B-A-L-A-N-C-E - balance (your code)."

March 7, 2006 Update
Vimeo's solution:
Upload Time: Broadband - 10-30 seconds
File Size Limitations: None
Weekly Upload Limits: 20megs
Tags: YES
Licensing: NO
Availability: immediately
URL: http://www.vimeo.com/
Source Code: HTML

Go to the site, use this tool. It's got better than average features and the developers want to know what you want. Tell them you want a pro-tool, tell them you'll pay for it and for the love of pete, tell them who sent you ;) And another thing - you have the ability to post-by-e-mail (handy for us futurephone users), thumbnail-via-flickr and there are forums for you to yak in.

VideoEgg's solution:
Upload Time: Broadband - 10-30 seconds
File Size Limitations: None
Tags: NO
Licensing: NO
Availability: immediately
URL: http://www.videoegg.com/
Source Code: FLASH or Javascript

As you can see - it's already been co-branded with their logo. VideoEgg is currently partnered with SixApart. Keep an eye on your Typepad-friends accounts for the video-blog-post explosion. (not sure what's up with all the whitespace up top)

Openvlog's solution:
Upload Time: Broadband - 10-30 seconds
File Size Limitations: 5 minutes
Tags: YES
Licensing: NO
Availability: immediately
Source code: HTML
URL: http://www.openvlog.com/

Again with the co-branding. This is really not good - Openvlog's logo is just enormous, in fact I'd say it's overwhelming. I do like the date/time stamp for posting. HOWEVER - the site does give me my own page: http://stepinrazor.openvlog.com/ - bien! bien!

Google's solution:
Upload Time: Broadband - 10-30 seconds
File Size Limitations: None
Tags: NO
Licensing: YES
Availability: varies, usually takes 3 to 4 weeks for "verification"
Source code: FLASH
URL: http://video.google.com/

No co-branding, whew. Just your video packaged in a (mostly) streamlined player. The thing is it takes way too long to get verified by Google's crack copyright-tracking team. The lack of immediacy will hurt this venture. (me, I've got stuff in the queue since 12/21. December 21st, 2005 Google's UI is in its infancy and needs some help. I'm sure they're working on it.

The following are sites that may or may not exist in the near, near future due to their hosting of copyrighted material. I still think they're interesting and worth looking at/using:

Vsocial's solution:
Upload Time: Broadband - 6 to 10 minutes, depends on filesize
File Size Limitations: None
Tags: YES
Licensing: YES
Availability: varies by file-size, not more than 6 minutes for this :2:30 file
Source code: HTML
URL: http://www.vsocial.com/

Over-the-top co-branded with links to the video's page at Vsocial.com where viewers can add comments, send-to-friends, see tags and related video. Clever e-mail alerts are sent once your video is ready.

YouTube's Solution:
Upload Time: Broadband - "several minutes" in internet time, this means forever and well.. if they have the opportunity to work on it, they should. (ed. note: this file is 25 megs and it took 7-10 minutes to upload)
File Size Limitations: 100 MB
Tags: YES
Licensing: NO
Availability: Immediately
Source Code: FLASH
URL: http://www.youtube.com/

Co-branded with the YouTube logo. Has a visually appealing streamlined UI. HOWEVER - here is where I will note: Internal Server Error upon trying to add detailed information about the video. Fun.
